Off topic but not being a French speaker, I’ve wondered why the French is “24 Heures du Mans” Given that the town is Le Mans why is it “du Mans”?

Because le Mans, would be the Mans in english. Le is only an article that is part of the name...

In french, we don’t say “Les 24h de le Mans” which would translate by “The 24 hours of the Mans”. Instead of using “De le”, which is not correct french, we say “Du”. Therefore, it becomes “Les 24 heures du Mans”.

Same thing when we go there. To say “We’re going at the Mans”, we cannot say “Nous allons à le Mans”. Instead of “À le”, we use “Au”. Therefore the correct way to say it is “Nous allons au Mans”.

Don’t worry, I do speak German and do love Ramstein too... :)

“Du” in German translates by “tu” in French though :)
